Many cultures around the world celebrate the ideas of birth, death, and reincarnation. The evening of October 31st through the morning of November 1st is when four different celebrations occur based on the ideas of death and reincarnation. In alphabetical order they are, All Saints Day, Dia de los Muertos, Halloween and Samhain. While they share the same time frame, each celebration focuses on vastly divergent ideas. Each one, highlights how very differently the people of the world view the prospect of death and the unknowns of afterward. The image above is titled ‘Espíritu’ meaning spirit. It is one of my representations of the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). I feel that at times people pay so much attention to the experience of the celebration that they lose sight of the meaning behind the holiday. So, as one of my long term projects, I have started a series called Holiday. Each image will represent a specific holiday and my interpretation of the deeper meaning behind the holiday and it’s celebrations. There is currently no set limit for this series and they are not limited to any one region or area of the world. I look forward to sharing more with you over the coming years. Happy Holidays!
